More Than a Game: Cricket Brings Young People Together at Embrach
A day of cricket, new friendships and new perspectives at the Embrach Cricket Ground
What started as a Corporate Volunteering Cricket Community Day turned into a memorable celebration of sport, friendship, inclusion and community at the Embrach Cricket Ground.
Embrach Cricket Academy was delighted to welcome volunteers from Zurich Insurance, AOZ volunteers and young participants from the AOZ Youth Development Programme for a day designed to bring people from different backgrounds together through cricket.
With around 35 participants, the day was filled with energy, curiosity and plenty of smiles. For many of the participants, it was their first experience of cricket. Through a series of interactive coaching stations, they learned the basics of batting, bowling, fielding and running between the wickets while working together in mixed teams.
But the real success of the day went far beyond what happened on the cricket field.
Building connections through cricket
The mixed teams created an opportunity for young people and volunteers to meet others they may otherwise never have encountered. Working together, learning from each other and sharing experiences helped break down barriers and create new friendships.
Throughout the day, conversations continued alongside the cricket. Different cultures, experiences and perspectives came together, creating an environment where everyone had something to contribute and something to learn.
For the young participants, the event provided an opportunity to see different possibilities for their future, interact with professionals and gain new perspectives on education, work and life in Switzerland.
For the corporate volunteers, it was an opportunity to step outside their usual working environment, engage directly with the local community and experience the positive impact that meaningful interaction can have.
From coaching stations to a cricket tournament
After a morning of cricket activities, everyone came together for a shared lunch featuring South Asian and Afghan cuisine. Food provided another opportunity for participants to connect and share their cultures.
The afternoon brought out the competitive spirit, with the mixed teams taking part in a friendly cricket tournament. There was plenty of excitement on the field, but the emphasis remained firmly on teamwork, participation and enjoyment.
The day concluded with an awards ceremony, celebrating not only the winning team but the contribution and enthusiasm of everyone who took part.
Creating memories that last
The most rewarding aspect of the event was seeing young people make new connections that could last a lifetime. A simple cricket activity became an opportunity to meet new people, exchange experiences, gain confidence and look at the world from a different perspective.
This is the power of sport.
Cricket has the ability to bring people together regardless of their background, language or experience. At Embrach Cricket Academy, we believe that the game can be an important vehicle for integration, personal development and community building.
